The National Interagency Fire Center reports "nationwide, the 2004 fire season saw 7,912,571 acres burned, with over $500 million spent in suppression costs, and 1,084 structures destroyed." The Center considers fire activity in the lower 48 states during the 2004 fire season to be below average. A combined 61,873 fires burned 1,394,144 acres. However, Alaska experienced a record breaking fire season, where a total 703 fires burned 6,517,200 acres. Fewer lightning strikes and successful initial attacks contributed to the light fire season.
